A Message From Major Kane
No DARE at NSE this week – I am in a transition week between second and fourth grade so I took a week off to allow for schedule adjustments. I will finally be in second and fourth grade in Saint Ambrose this week after several false starts. The weather hasn’t cooperated so far, and last week I was sick so I skipped going to Haven. The teacher profiles were updated today, I hope to do the sponsor profiles over Wednesday.

Second Graders enjoying the sunlight and the Cheesetruck - with special guest Daren.
The sixth grade girls did a short anti-alcohol video a few months ago and I finally got it up on You Tube. Go to You Tube and type in "ns dare alcohol" and it should get you to the link. I hope to do more videos soon.
How many of you have spring fever? It is strange to go from a blizzard one day to 50 degree weather a week later. That isn’t good for all of you who like to snowboard, but I am glad to see all of the snow melting! Baseball and softball practice starts in a few weeks, and I hope that you all have good cleats because the fields are going to be awfully muddy and moist after this snow melts. I understand that the Ashland girls will be playing against Shenandoah and Frackville this season – that is good for me, less time driving to places like Elysburg and Treverton.
I have narrowed down the DARE graduations to the week after Easter. I didn’t pick an exact date yet, but graduation for NS and Saint Ambrose will be sometime between April 12th and April 16th. I will be working hard on getting all of that ready in the next few weeks. I did start working on the videos and the essays have been read. I will be sending home more information about the graduations in the very near future.
I know that spring is just around the corner because the train at the Pioneer Tunnel is scheduled for its’ hydro testing so that it can be certified for the upcoming season! I am ready for the tourist season, I am anxious to run the train and give the tours once again; I miss that over the winter! I was in the mine a few times over the winter but I haven’t been out the tracks since the end of October. I will have to walk out when all of the snow is gone.
I had the pleasure of attending the county Soccer Scholar Athlete Banquet this past Sunday and I would like to congratulate three DARE graduates for being chosen by their schools for this honor. Nativity was represented by Shaunna Quirk (I had her in DARE at Holy Family, I miss that school,) and Allison Kane and Sean Scoober Jones represented North Schuylkill. Congratulations to all three intelligent athletes!

Congratulations to our local Soccer Scholar Athletes.
We will be having Antlers this weekend! I am not sure what we are going to do, but I will work on the Antler newsletter tonight and I hope to get it in the mail for you tomorrow. I am still considering Nerf guns and I will decide on that tonight. I have a few more things up my sleeve, and it could prove to be a fun night. Hopefully you will have your Antler newsletter by Thursday, and I hope to see you all there! We are always accepting new Antler members, so see me if you are interested, or just ask a friend who is already an Antler.
I was asked how the “Cheesetruck” got its’ name today, so I thought that I would explain it for everyone. When the DARE Van was dying I was looking for a replacement for it. I went to the County surplus lot to see what was available and I saw that the Meals on Wheels vehicle was being surplused so I took it for a test drive. It only had 68,000 miles on it, it is four wheel drive, and it has some great storage in the back. The truck had been sponsored by Kraft, and when I first had it the trademark “Kraft Cheese: was on it. I drove it like that a while before it was relettered and that year’s sixth grade called it the “Cheesetruck” and the name stuck. The front compartment is a cooler for keeping food cold, and the back part has a heat unit for hot food. Both compartments still work, but I only use it to haul DARE supplies..
Tonight is the last round of Schuylkill Idol at the mall and I wish Maura Gownley the best of luck. I was talking to Bryel Frasch today and she feels that Maura is the best singer left in the contest and she hopes that Maura wins. Bryel told me that she enjoyed competing and that she is looking forward to trying again next year. Bryel is a great sport and I wish her well!
Up for a tough question, see if you can answer this one. What high school in the NS jointure was "The Mounties?"
If you know the answer, put it in the guestbook. The first eight students who get this correct will get a lemon scented highlighter (I am supporting the PTO this week.). Students in any grade at North Schuylkill or Saint Ambrose are allowed to enter, however members of the DARE Student Advisory Board are not eligible to participate! YOUR ANSWER MUST BE POSTED BY 10:00 PM on March 15th, 2010. Last weeks answer is: A secret "grip" is a handshake. Congratulations to: Jadyn Anczarski, Austin Raup, and Rachel Bell for getting it right.
